Understanding Diabetes

By Ronny Pratteroll

Health professionals are now concerned of the growing number of people with diabetes. Even children already exhibit symptoms of diabetes. This is why everyone is now getting busy in trying to disseminate information about the disease, its causes and symptoms and most importantly prevention and cure.

Diabetes is a condition where the body is no longer able to process blood sugar. There are in fact to main instances when diabetes occurs. First up is the problem with insulin production of the body. Second is when the cells of the body are not able to react properly to insulin in the body. The amount of sugar in the blood increases because the body is no longer able to convert the sugar from food into energy.

Increased blood sugar levels in the body has a lot of harmful effects. Common symptoms of this condition include tiredness, eye problems and slow healing wounds. In worst case scenarios it can cause blindness, amputation and other complicated problems.

There is no clear explanation as to how is diabetes caused. Others say that it is due to diet and lifestyle but most believe that these things only aggravate the situation but are not direct causes of the condition. The cause is mainly focused on the ability of the body to produce insulin or the ability of the cells to respond to it. Some types of diabetes can also be inherited from parents.

But regardless of the cause, what is more important right now is the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Here are some tips on how to control diabetes:

1. Exercise-studies show that blood sugar can be controlled through exercise. One big factor is because it helps in weight management. For those who don't have diabetes yet but are on verge of having it, losing weight also reduces the chances of actually having diabetes. Aside from that, it is also good for overall well-being.

2. Eat healthy-foods with fiber and whole grain are recommended for those who have diabetes. This may be because of its effect in your metabolism.

3. Have the right attitude-a positive attitude will really do a lot. It does not only make your feel better, it helps produce hormones that promote faster recovery from diseases.

If you feel that you're experiencing the symptoms of diabetes, consult your doctor immediately for appropriate treatment.
